    From bugs to rocks, it’s not unusual for kids to bring home interesting things they find in nature. Dr. Forrest Jones was no different. It was that curiosity for what makes a living thing thrive, or decline, that directed his path to medical school. Today, Dr. Jones is providing compassionate care to a specific group of people he greatly respects and wants to see thrive—seniors.

    Dr. Abhay Deshmukh’s medical practice is based on three things he values most: honesty, integrity and compassion. “It’s what all patients deserve,” says Dr. Deshmukh. “I want my patients to know that I’m here to help them in their time of need.     While Dr. Gregory Brown is examining and treating his patients' feet, he's also putting a smile on their faces. "I'm a man who cares about people," he says. "I was actually encouraged by many seniors to become a doctor. They told me I was a patient man and that's what they were looking for in a practitioner." After serving as a registered pharmacist for 10 years, Dr. Brown completed his advanced medical education and became a podiatrist.

    It may seem farfetched to hear a two-year-old predict her future, but that's precisely what Guameda Eady did. She knew then that she wanted to help others by becoming a nurse. "I have a passion for teaching patients about their health," Guameda says. "Knowledge is power, and the more information patients have, the better they understand how important it is to be involved in their health care. They learn that managing their health can help them remain independent and enjoy a better quality of life over time. I love working with seniors. While I'm helping them, they're helping me learn more from their life experiences." Guameda provides complete healthcare to her patients, including preventive care and treatment for chronic conditions. She is a passionate advocate for her patients and their families, helping to simplify the healthcare process and enjoy a better patient experience. She keeps up with the latest advances in medicine through continuous education and training, and collaborates with other JenCare physicians to deliver the best care to seniors. Guameda earned her Bachelor's degree in nursing from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. After more than 21 years as a registered nurse, she earned her Master's degree from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, IL, to become a family nurse practitioner. Outside of the office, Gaumeda enjoys spending time with her husband, Gary, their children, Asia and Jalen, and her mother, Esther. She loves sports, especially football, likes to travel and hopes to visit Australia some day.

  • Andrea Jones, LAc

    Andrea Jones was eight years old when she decided she wanted to care for others’ health. “I grew up helping several senior citizens in my family and neighborhood. I was able to hear stories and learn about their lives. So it feels right that now, as an adult, I get to treat seniors as a licensed acupuncture therapist.” In addition to acupuncture, Andrea also specializes in cupping and Tui Na to help people with chronic pain, stress, anxiety, and other conditions. “I love listening to people and helping them feel better. It’s rewarding to see them walk out of my office feeling calmer, with less pain, and a smile on their faces,” she adds.

  • Ellen Muhammad, MS, RD, LDN, CFT

    Ellen Muhammad knows that a balanced nutrition plan can help prevent or control illness and help her patients live a higher quality of life. “I specialize in medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education and counseling," says Ellen. "I see the positive effects that food and healthy eating schedules can have in patients who are trying to lose weight, manage a chronic condition, and stay well. My patients' well-being is important and I work closely with them to help them reach their personal goals.”

  • Gerard Rios

    LAc

    After earning a degree in mechanical engineering and working at a prominent electronics firm, Gerard Rios realized he was more interested in human structures and systems. He went on to earn his master’s in oriental medicine. Today, he specializes in oncology, ortho-neuro and stroke rehabilitation. “Healthcare should be about the patient/doctor partnership,” says Gerard. “Every patient encounter is an opportunity for me to enhance the rich medical heritage passed on through the ages and sages of Chinese medicine.” Gerard and his wife have two sons. He enjoys Tai Chi, snowboarding, mountain biking, amateur photography and world travel. One of his favorite trips was canyoning in Provence, France.

  • Bhavna Balaney

    MD

    Board-certified physician Bhavna Balaney specializes in cardiology. In medical school and residency training she often worked with senior patients within the veterans health system. She feels cardiology and prevention is important for seniors and looks forward to putting her experience to good use at JenCare. “It is a pleasure to take care of seniors,” says Dr. Balaney. “Sometimes they may look frail but they are pretty spunky! The best thing I can do is listen to my patients and help them keep living a good life.” Dr. Balaney has a toddler and loves to spend time with her family, read, and try out new restaurants. She also enjoys traveling; Australia has been her favorite place to visit.

  • Mansur Haque

    A collection of experiences led Dr. Mansur Haque to pursue medicine. “I realized this is what I really enjoy doing and want to continue doing for the rest of my life,” he says. He believes that “prevention is better than cure.” He explains, “I strongly believe in value- based care and want to promote better health in underserved communities.” He enjoys “the complexity of medicine” and is thankful for the learning opportunity of each case. “I see my patients as my extended family and treat them with kindness, compassion, and a caring manner with honest and open answers,” he says. Dr. Haque likes staying active through sports and enjoying the outdoors in his free time. He also loves traveling and has visited over fifteen countries.

    DPM, ABPM

    Dr. Elizabeth Unanue finds it rewarding to “improve the quality of life of my patients.” She wants them to feel comfortable asking questions and discussing concerns. “I believe that it is so important to work as a team with your patient to create a treatment plan together,” she says. Good communication, empowerment, and education are key in her practice. “Every patient deserves to feel understood, loved, and respected,” she says. She especially enjoys caring for the senior population. “Ensuring patients are able to remain mobile as they age is so important for their quality of life,” she says. In her free time, Dr. Unanue loves hiking and camping with her husband, son, and three dogs. She also likes gardening and visiting museums.

  • Pallavi Pradeep

    For as long as Dr. Pallavi Pradeep can remember, she has wanted to be a doctor. She was inspired to pursue a career in medicine by her grandfather, who worked as a radiologist. “Being able to solve problems and improving someone’s health” is her favorite part of her profession. She strives to understand each patient’s needs and emphasizes the importance of preventative care and early diagnosis. She especially enjoys providing her senior patients with “the love and care they need to have a better life.” To keep up with the latest medical advancements, she attends conferences and reads medical journals and guidelines. She also has knowledge and experience on endocrinology, diabetes, and lipidology. Dr. Pradeep loves starting her weekend mornings with Pilates. She also enjoys cooking and trying new restaurants.

    Dr. Yung Sim found his passion for healthcare later in life, after his patents developed health problems. “Healthcare should be about quality not quantity. We should focus more on improving outcomes rather then the number we treat,” he says. His favorite part of his profession is seeing patients leave his office feeling better. He loves talking with patients and encouraging them to take charge of their health goals. “The best way to help my patients is listening,” he explains. He adds, “I’ve worked with many populations and find helping seniors to be the most rewarding and meaningful.” In his free time, Dr. Sim enjoys attending concerts, watching sports, and cooking. He also loves the outdoors and has a mini garden on his balcony.

    Volunteering at a local hospital sparked Dr. Sanwar Boyal’s interest in healthcare. “I chose to be a doctor to be able to help those who need it most,” he says. He explains, “My favorite part of being a family doctor is getting to know my patients personally and building relationships with them over time.” He adds, “I get to know my patients very well, not just in terms of their health but also personally. I treat all of my patients as I would someone from my family—with kindness, patience, and respect.” He finds it “incredibly fulfilling” to care for his senior patients. In his free time, Dr. Boyal enjoys staying active by hiking and walking his dog. He also enjoys traveling and collecting mugs from museums.

    Shavon Davis discovered her interest in the medical field at only five years old, when her aunt gifted her a microscope. “They say if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life. With that being said, I feel blessed that God has given me this passion and I truly love what I do,” she explains. For Shavon Davis, cultivating strong relationships with patients is the best part of working in healthcare. She especially likes caring for the senior population, explaining, “I enjoy their company, stories, experience, and wisdom.” In her down time, Shavon Davis enjoys going to dinner with her husband and taking her kids to theme parks. She also loves traveling and hopes to visit Alaska one day.

    Dr. Maria Steriu’s passion for healthcare derives from her family, explaining that she wants to follow in her father’s footsteps. She prioritizes effective communication by actively listening and providing answers for patients in accessible language. She adds that being respectful, honest, and reliable are crucial within patient care. She explains, “I think being empathetic and having the mindset that one day, I can be the patient I am seeing today […] makes me detailed in my examination, history-taking, paying attention to details, and being organized.” She strives to reinforce treatment plans that are “sustainable and realistic.” In her free time, Dr. Maria Steriu enjoys kayaking, painting, and spending time with family.

    Dr. Cristina Marti-Amarista comes from a family of healthcare providers, which motivated her to pursue a career in medicine. “My favorite part is feeling I am helping others the best way I can and having the opportunity to learn something new every day,” she says. She highly respects the senior population and loves serving them. “I am a strong believer in the humanistic approach to life, in which empathy, genuineness, and giving unconditional support are the key factors for thriving,” she says. She adds, “I aim for my patients to know I care for them and to see me as an ally.” Dr. Marti-Amarista enjoys playing board games with family, spending time with friends, and painting in her free time. She also loves reading crime novels.
