Dr. Fronza provides succinct explanations of common and complex gastrointestinal problems. He believes that a warm bedside manner sets the tone for a productive doctor/patient relationship. He enjoys working with patients to determine an individualized care plan, and then actualizing that plan during the perioperative period. As a surgeon, Dr. Fronza achieves superior functional and oncologic results by utilizing advanced surgical techniques. This intense focus on technique has resulted in Dr. Fronza being a pioneer in LINX and mesh free, natural tissue hernia repair in Illinois.
Dr. Toyama believes that a straight-forward, clear-thinking approach to surgical disease not only is the best way to treat the problem, but also is the best way to keep a patient informed. As a surgeon, Dr. Toyama weds his extensive expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery, including the largest experience in laparoscopic hernia repairs available at Northwestern, to a belief that operations must be tailored to the particular needs of a patient.
After practicing surgery for over 30 years, Dr. Hartz strongly believes that a general surgeon must understand the whole disease process and how it affects the individual patient. He is intimately involved in all aspects of a patient’s care both inside and outside the operating room. He couples this professional attitude with a warm, inviting bedside manner. As a surgeon, Dr. Hartz subscribes to the philosophy “If it looks good, it is good,” and this attention to detail in the operating room leads to excellent outcomes such as a recurrence rate of less than .5% in his personal series of inguinal hernia repairs.
Dr. Stryker treats each patient as if he/she is a member of his family. Active listening is the first step in all discussions regarding care of major gastrointestinal problems. All major elements of the patient’s care occur only with the patient’s and Dr. Stryker’s approval, and this eliminates issues of miscommunication that may occur during the care of a complex surgical condition. As a surgeon, Dr. Stryker relies on his years of experience treating complex colorectal conditions to provide his patient with the safest and most effective treatment, which assures their speedy recovery.
Dr. Davila believes that every patient deserves a customized plan of care. One size does not fill all. As a result, he dedicates time to listening to every patient before developing a more comprehensive, patient-centered care strategy. He dedicated his training to a wide range of approaches including traditional and minimally invasive techniques, including advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery, so that multiple options are available. He enjoys working with patients and their families emphasizing an open and approachable bedside manner.

Dr. Jeffrey S. Fronza and Dr. Daniel Davila perform laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic duodenal switch, and revisional bariatric surgery. You must have a body mass index of 40 or higher to be eligible for surgery. If you have a body mass index between 35 and 39 and you have at least one medical problem that is made worse by obesity, then you may be eligible. Verify that Northwestern Memorial Hospital is a part of your coverage (please note: if your insurance does not cover surgery, a self-pay option may be available). Please contact the office to schedule an initial consultation to discuss the life-changing possibilities of weight-loss surgery.

When Dr. Steven J. Stryker returned to Chicago after training at the Mayo Clinic, he brought with him a new approach to the treatment of rectal cancer. He was one of the first in Chicago to promote neoadjuvant chemoradiation and to perform coloanal anastomosis in order to prevent the need for a permanent colostomy in the treatment of rectal cancer. He was the first surgeon in Illinois to perform a laparoscopic colectomy, and participated in a seminal clinical trial exploring the oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic surgery. He was the first surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital to perform a laparoscopic appendectomy. This pioneering spirit continues to thrive at Northwestern Surgical Associates, and we approach the patient with colorectal disease with an eye to minimizing surgical trauma and maximizing functional and/or oncologic outcome.
This applies to patients with inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, colorectal cancer, and even those with benign anorectal disorders like hemorrhoids. Dr. Stryker has a particular interest in treating women with chronic digestive disorders, which he does through his women’s clinic, Digestique. The clinic offers both traditional and alternative medical approaches in a comfortable facility to provide expeditious diagnosis and compassionate treatment of these disabling conditions.
Cancer of the upper gastrointestinal tract can be one of the most challenging situations a surgeon and a patient face. Our surgeons have the expertise to help patients navigate these emotionally and physically charged situations.
We lead a multi-disciplinary team, which includes gastroenterologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists, in order to treat these complex conditions utilizing the latest advances in cancer care.
Dr. Jeffrey S Fronza is trained in the technically demanding area of minimally-invasive approaches to esophageal, stomach, and some forms of pancreatic cancer. At Northwestern Surgical Associates we are committed to partnering with patients in order to treat these malignancies effectively.
Diseases of the gallbladder and appendix are common, and our surgeons at Northwestern Surgical Associates are often called upon to treat patients suffering from these conditions by the Emergency Department or a primary care physician’s office. Less common diseases such achalasia, paraesophageal hernia, and severe gastroesophageal reflux disease require an astute internist or gastroenterologist and a motivated patient in order for a surgeon to be called upon for evaluation.
Fortunately NSA has surgeons are trained specifically to address these life-style limiting conditions of the gastrointestinal tract in a minimally-invasive manner. Please contact our office to set up a consultation to discuss a surgical treatment of these often undertreated diseases.
